Product Review: COAST Products DX335

Coast Products

COAST Products offer a variety of products for those involved with emergency services. They produce many flashlights, knives, head lamps, and multi-tools. I have been asked to conduct a product review on several of their products, and have been blown away by the quality of each. My first review of the RX322 can be viewed by CLICKING HERE.

DX335

The D335 blade quickly cut through the seatbelt.

The DX335 caught my eye from the start by the atypical design and shape of the blade. I have had several knives throughout the last several years, and this is the first one that I have carried of this design. I have however, carried multiple fire-rescue style knives, but most of which had a standard style blade. The blade on the DX335 is made of 7Cr17 stainless steel. The design of the blade is based around being able to cut seatbelts with ease. A glass-breaking tip is built onto the tip as well as a secondary seatbelt cutter. The double-lock locking system on the knife allows the user to lock the blade open, and it also allows it to be unlocked with the swipe of the thumb. The grip-textured aluminum handle is designed to prevent slippage and increase grip. The thumb studs on both sides make it easy to open for right and left-handers.

Specifications:

  • Cr17 stainless steel blade
  • 3.25 in. / 8.25 cm blade
  • 8.12 in. / 20.6 cm overall
  • 4.2 oz. / 119 g
  • Clothing/seat-belt cutting blade design
  • Grip-textured aluminum handle
  • Deep-carry pocket clip
  • US Patent: 5,596,808

Performance

The integrated seatbelt cutter also sliced through the material easily.

The blade operated flawlessly while cutting the seatbelts the a small amount of tension. The handle provides enough room to keep your hand away from the blade while cutting through the seatbelt. When the integrated seat-belt cutter was used, I did find that the fabric bunched up inside of the small opening and was a little bit harder to cut, but it still was able to cut through the fabric with a minimum amount of readjusting.

The DX335 tip of the knife has a built-in glass breaker

The built in glass breaker worked fine with a swinging strike to the window. The glass-breaker is not spring loaded, therefore, it did require force to break the glass. If you have the proper hand/eye protection on, then it should protect your hand from being cut by the broken glass. We positioned our hand to rest against the B-post when the window was struck to prevent the hand from also busting through the glass.

Click here to purchase your DX335 today! The retail value of this knife is $32.99, which I believe is a very reasonable price for the knife. This is a knife that I would keep in my turnout coat pocket, and would use in a heartbeat. Rather then having to gather a seatbelt cutter, glass punch, and additional tools…all these are available in this one knife.

The only concern I could see is the difficulty in sharpening the odd shaped blade. I do not claim to be educated in this area, so this may not be a problem.
