Responders in the Tri-Cities Climb to Remember the Fallen

kptclimb1This morning, firefighters from Kingsport Fire Department and other local departments gathered at the Holston Valley Medical Center parking garage to climb to remember the fallen firefighters from 9/11/01. While the event was a last minute idea from a few brothers at KFD that were unable to travel to one of the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation’s events this weekend, they still wanted to pay tribute. Wellmont Health Systems were quick to grant permission for the responders to use the stairwells early this morning, and were kind enough to provide water for the participants.

The climb started just after 6AM this morning with eleven firefighters starting the 110 floor climb. KFD Fire Chaplain Barry Carr provided the group with a prayer prior to ascending the stairs. The firefighters listened to the bone-chilling radio traffic from the FDNY as they climbed. The firefighters climbed to the 9th floor 10 times, and then to the 10th floor twice.

While many of the brothers had climbed in numerous 9/11 Memorial Stair climbs in the past, this was a first for many. We had a great turnout from the media to cover the climb, and were very thankful for the cooperation from Wellmont Health Systems. I am going to be checking into possibly hosting one at a facility in the Tri-Cities.

As for me, I am headed North and will be attending a 9/11 Ceremony at the Marion Fire Department tonight at 7:30PM. After the ceremony, we will be headed to the Queen City for the Charlotte 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Fire Training Day this weekend.
