On Monday, October 20th, around 10:15AM, C-shift firefighters in Kingsport were alerted of a possible vehicle fire at OmniSource, a metal recycling plant on West Stone Drive. As crews were responding, heavy smoke was visible on approach and requested additional units to respond. The fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke inside the building where vehicles were being crushed. The thick heavy smoke inside the structure was found to be coming from a vehicle crusher that is positioned against one of the exterior walls.
Firefighters attacked the fire with an 1 3/4″ preconnect, and were able to quickly knockdown the fire. The fire had extended up the rear wall and hydraulic fluid/fuel had made the fire grow rapidly prior to units arriving on-scene. A 5″ supply line was laid up to the business from West Stone Drive to provide crews with a water supply.
The cause of the fire was under the investigation of the Kingsport Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Division.
Units Responded: Chief 3, Engine 4, Engine 1, Fire-Rescue 12, Ladder 1
