This afternoon, Kingsport Firefighters (B-Shift) responded to West Park Drive for a reported basement fire. The full assignment consisted of Chief 3, Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 4, Engine 5 Fire-Rescue 12, and Ladder 1. On arrival, C-3 assumed West Park Command, reported a single story structure with a sub-level, and advised nothing was visible from the exterior.

Fire crews made entry into the basement of the structure with the water can, and encountered a moderate amount of smoke. As the crews searched for the source, it was found the an electrical fire had started in the basement. The fire had grown and burnt through an elbow in the piping on top of the hot water heater, which failed, causing water to extinguish the fire. The remaining hot-spots were extinguished with the PW can, and the structure was ventilated using a PPV fan.

Units remained on-scene until the smoke had been removed from the structure, and the KFD Fire Marshal’s Office started their investigation. The fire was determined to be electrical, and crews cleared the scene shortly after.
