While B-shift fire crews were critiquing two fires from earlier this week (Monday/Wednesday) this evening, the meeting was cut short as another reported structure fire came in.
Around 2:30PM, KFD firefighters responded to the Brandy Mill Apartments on East Stone Drive for a reported structure fire. Due to the initial reports of flames visible and multiple 911 calls, all units responded emergency traffic to the scene. Within 4 minutes from dispatch, Chief 3 arrived on-scene and reported a 3 story apartment complex with fire visible. C-3 assumed Brandy Mill Command.
The first arriving crews were ready to work as soon as the park brake set on the Engine. An 1 3/4 inch preconnect line was pulled to the 2nd floor, and the crew made the push into the fire apartment. Crews encountered conditions with no-visibility and extreme heat as they pushed on to locate the seat of the fire. Additional crews pulled hoselines to protect the stairwell and provide back-up for the attack crew. The apartments were searched to ensure all of the residents had exited the structure prior to arrival.
The attack crew was able to quickly locate and extinguish the fire. Firefighters worked to clear the fire apartment of the smoldering contents to ensure that all of the embers had been extinguished. The fire had vented out of an exterior window and caused heavy smoke damage to the apartment above. Crews worked on-scene to clear the remaining apartments of smoke as the Fire Marshal’s Office began an investigation of the scene.
One patient was transported for evaluation to the Emergency Room by Sullivan County EMS.
Kingsport Police, Kingsport Lifesaving Crew, AEP, and American Red Cross also provided assistance on the scene.
At least two families were displaced from the apartments, and possibly a third.
