The Firehouse Kitchen Table is one of the most used pieces of furniture in firehouses across the country. This is where crews unwind after a tough run, break bread at meal times, give reports at shift change, and solve nearly all of the worlds problems. No matter what department you are with, it’s safe to say that the kitchen table is where tears have been shed, problems have been solved, and where the fellowship takes place on a regular basis.
Firefighters from across the nation have pride in their department, their station, and many…their kitchen table. This is possibly one of the most customized pieces of furniture in the firehouse, and it seems that many of you share that pride and passion. This is the third GALLERY post on The “Model City” Firefighter within the last several weeks, and they seem to be a hit.

The amazing thing about all of the tables that were submitted via email or on our Facebook page (link) is that not one is the same. Some of the tables are huge in size, and others are simple and crafty. As I sit here righting this article on ours, I see a store bought standard table without any customization. While we may have plans to change that, it doesn’t change the tradition and/or importance of it.
I’d like to share an excerpt of an article by Mark Gregory (FDNY) from Urban Firefighter Magazine that was posted a few years ago online: (Click here to read his full article.)
Lastly, the kitchen table has medicinal powers. Many of us have come into the firehouse feeling out of sorts. Home issues can put a strain on any one of us. Recently, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. I never realized the healing power and strength that one can gain hanging around that firehouse table. The stress of the situation definitely has its toll on your mental health. The support of the brothers-combined with the well wishes and offers of assistance-can raise a man from the ashes. The table humor amongst the brothers also helps to make your problems go away. Even if it is for only a 24…-Mark Gregory (Urban Firefighter Magazine)
