Around 18:45 (03/08/15), Kingsport Firefighters (B-shift) were alerted of a reported structure fire at a residence on Poplar Street in the downtown area of the city. Dispatch advised firefighters that they had received multiple calls for the fire. As the Engine 1 crew pulled out of the station, they advised the other responding units to respond emergency traffic due to smoke being visible multiple blocks away.
Firefighters quickly arrived on-scene and reported a large volume of fire visible from the structure. As the crews went to work, multiple hand lines were quickly placed into service to knockdown the fire. Once the initial knockdown, crews advanced lines into the structure to continue extinguishing the fire. Multiple aerial devices were placed into service to assist in efforts of getting the fire extinguished.
Fire crews remained on-scene working to extinguish hot spots, and conducting salvage/overhaul operations. Two patients were transported to the Emergency Room via Sullivan County EMS for minor injuries. The American Red Cross also responded to assist the family that was displaced from the home. American Electric and Kingsport PD also assisted on-scene.
