Military-style Turnout Gear to be on Show at FDIC

viking-titanboothpicWhat can the military bring to the design of turnout gear? For those who have proudly fought for our country, you’ll be familiar with the smart modular pouches and pockets to combat gear and backpacks to carry various kinds of military accessories.

Basically, there’s a system of webbed loops covering a large sections of the pack or clothing. You can use these loops to attach a modular pouch, for example, to your kit to carry ammo, flares, grenades or whatever you need to have along with you.

Using this kind of system as inspiration for turnout gear makes it easy to personalize things the way you like it. VIKING Life-saving Equipment’s turnout gear is a good example. If you look at the new jacket design, most of the torso area is covered in webbing ready for modular pockets, so whatever you prefer to have in easy reach, you’re the boss with this gear. Another neat thing about the jacket is the elastic material used under the arms, which looks like it’s good for being able to move freely. VIKING has spent some time designing freedom of movement into the jacket – and the pants – so, for example, the elbows and knees are pre-bent.

Everything’s reinforced with DuPont™ Kevlar® (like shoulders, elbows, cuffs), too. The pants are totally customizable, with detachable internal kneepads, removable under-boot straps and a lot more. A lot of work seems to have gone into the overall design and I think it’s one of the best turnout gear products we’ve seen to date. You can see it for yourself at VIKING’s s booth at FDIC (Booth # 1100), and talk to the VIKING team about the whys and hows of personalizing turnout gear.

The Fire Critic, Wooden Ladders and Iron Firemen‘s Cpt. Willie Wines, and myself will be in the Viking Life-saving Equipment booth at FDIC talking with firefighters about the new style/concept of the gear! Check out the schedule below to find out when we will be there:
