After nearly 10 years of planning, the new training center will allow firefighters to utilize ladder work, hose handling, mayday scenarios, among other things. The facility has 2 Class A burn rooms that will allow firefighters to participate in live fire training. The options are limitless with what we will be able to accomplish with having this facility.
A number of people have worked hard on turning this project into reality, but I believe our Training Officer, Sr. Cpt. Joel Jones, should be most proud. Cpt. Jones handles all of the training activities for the KFD, and also the Administrator Northeast TN Regional Fire Training Association Recruit School. When I was hired on in ’08, this school was hosted in neighboring Johnson City, but since that time has migrated to Kingsport. The recruits that go through the “rookie” school come from a number of the area departments from Bristol to Jefferson City.
Sr. Cpt. Jones is one of the employees that often times working the behind the scenes for our employees. With 120+ employees, the training never stops. In addition to all of the fire training, KFD personnel are trained as EMT’s and Paramedics. All of these certifications have to be recertified every few years. He is very dedicated to our department, and ensures all the paperwork is handled in the process.
The plaque reads:
